Race 1: third and fourth in class and overall and 50.000 Max Verstappen fans Race 2: third and fourth in class and even more Max Verstappen fans
20 May 2017
This weekend the Inter Europol Competition team participated at Zandvoort (NED) in the GT & Prototype challenge powered by Hankook. Max Verstappen was the big attraction here and there were around 50.000 fans each day. Regulars Kuba Smiechowski and Martin Hippe each piloted a car and both had a Boss GP driver as their co-driver. Wolfgang Jordan (GER) in the #203 with Smiechowski, Hans Laub (GER) in the #204 with Hippe. In Race 1 the #203 finished third overall and the #204 fourth, in Race 2 the cars finished third and fourth in class.
Smiechowski qualified the #203 to start Race 1 from pole and Hippe the #204 from third. For Race 2 Smiechowski/Jordan started from second and Hippe/Laub from third. Smiechowski and Hippe started in both races.
Saturday. The start of Race 1 was good for both cars. An exciting fight between the first three cars, the #203, the #204 and the Renault RS01, showed that their lap times were very close. When the pit window opened Smiechowski came in first. He handed the car over to Jordan and two laps later Hippe handed the #204 over to Laub. Both Boss GP drivers pushed and their lap times were two seconds quicker than in qualifying. Jordan/Smiechowski finished third while Hippe/Laub came in fourth in class and overall.
Sunday. Around half of Race 2 was spent behind the safety car. The little racing both cars did went well. The pit stop for the #204 was a bit too quick which resulted in a drive through penalty and an extra 10 seconds was added for going too fast in the pit lane. And after a bit of a messy race and the finish behind the safety car, the result was a podium finish (third) in the LMP3 class for the #203 and a fourth place for the #204. Fifth and seventh overall.
Smiechowski set the quickest lap time in both races: Race 1: 1m34s533, Race 2: 1m34s856.
Kuba Smiechowski: ?In Race 1 my start was good and I was able to keep my place. I had some problems with the power steering and lost two places, one to the RS01 and one to Martin (Hippe). The problem never really went away all weekend. I overtook the RS01 just before the driver change. The pit stop went smooth. Jordan took over and he drove a great race. We were happy to be on the podium in third place overall. I cannot say much about the second race as we just did not race very much. But again glad to be on the podium.?
Wolfgang Jordan: ?The power steering problem was sometimes there and sometimes not which made driving the car a bit complicated but despite that I really enjoyed racing this car. But you do need the power steering. Of course being on the podium after both races made it very special. In the second race I felt more comfortable in the car. Wat a fantastic atmosphere here at Zandvoort. I had a great weekend.?
