Another 5th place

13 June 2021

In the second race of the World Endurance Championship at Portimao, the Inter Europol Competition Oreca LMP2 #34 with drivers Alex Brundle, Kuba Smiechowski and Louis Delétraz, finished again in 5thplace.  As they did in Spa. It wasn’t the most exciting race, but a solid one. The start with Brundle behind the wheel, was good as he made up one place and pushed for fourth. In the first two hours of the race, the car ran as high as second. Because of the tyre problem in Delétraz his second stint, the team finished in 5th position.

Louis Delétraz: “We finished 5th in the end which is very good points for the team. I think overall we had a good race. There are always a lot of new things to learn and improve on, on all levels. On pace, we were very strong. In my second stint, I lost a lot of time because of my rear left tyre. We will have to investigate this, as it was very strange. Great job was done by the team and thank you for the weekend.”

Kuba Smiechowski: “To be honest, this time 5th place is more deserved. And I think it proves we can fight with the others. The car is much better, and we are more competitive. I look for the same competitiveness in Monza and will fight to be better.”

Alex Brundle: “Exactly the same result as in Spa. However, it feels different as our expectations have moved; we were celebrating 5th in Spa, and now we are happy being 5th. I can see all of the elements we need, to put the car on the rostrum. We have to take the next steps and we have to start grinding towards the front.”

Sascha Fassbender: “We can be happy with this result but as this is a world championship, it is not only the car but also the rest that counts. At the moment we need too much time during the refuelling. Lap times are good, but we have to work on all parameters. Louis was super as were Kuba and Alex. The team made no mistakes this weekend and was really switched on, but we still lose too much during the pitstops. Lots of work to do, but we will be better at Monza.”
