Mugello VdeV (Italy)
15 September 2016
We came to Mugello for the fifth round of the VdeV Series in a positive mood after a good result in the last race in France. This race was supposed to be a bit different- it was the first of two 6-hours races. The second one will be season finale in Portugal. The weather forecast for this weekend was cloudless skies and high temperatures. Our drivers used the free practices for learning the track and we planned to try out a few setup changes. Everything went as planned and we gained some valuable data for the future. The qualifying went well. Martin Hippe and Jakub Smiechowski positioned the car on the fifth place- first of the LMP3 class. After only 3 hours the race had started. From the very beginning we had issues with the power steering- it spontaneously turned off just to return to normal momentarily. It was very exhausting for the drivers especially because the malfunction seemed to grow larger with time. The Safety Car on the beginning of the 4 hour, just as we finished refueling, messed with our plan. Our biggest opponents managed to come in a little bit later when everybody was cued up behind the Safety Car, thus gaining precious seconds over us. In the end both the drivers and the car managed to withstand this challenging race and for the second time win the in the overall classification with a significant gap to the rest of the field. We didn’t achieve the fastest lap time which proves that in Endurance races the most important things are a good and constant race pace, avoiding mistakes and of course crossing the finish line.
